Columbus Sailing Museum Docks in Local Marina; Public Invited to Tour
3/10/2010
GULF SHORES and ORANGE BEACH, Ala. – Sailing out of the history books and into a local marina, the public will have a five-day window to tour two Columbus replica ships, which will dock near LuLu’s Restaurant at Homeport Marina in Gulf Shores from March 11 through 14. This stop will be the Nina and Pinta’s first Alabama visit on the 2010 calendar of The Columbus Foundation.
“We are a floating museum,” said A.J. Sanger of the foundation. “What many people don’t realize is that that our Nina was built completely by hand – all 65 feet of her and without the use of power tools.”
Completed in 1991, the Nina has been referred to by Archaeology Magazine as “the most historically correct Columbus replica ever built” and has been on constant tour since 1992. The foundation’s second and larger ship, The Pinta, set sail in 2005 to join the Nina on its educational tour.
The ships will be open daily for walk-aboard self-guided tours from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. No reservations are necessary. Admission is $7.00 for adults, $6.00 for senior citizens and $5.00 for students. Children under four are free.
For additional information, email columfnd@surfbvi.com, call the ships directly at 787-672-2152, or visit www.thenina.com.
